The Observatory

If this is a Friday night stop reading.

Get out of here. Go find your friends.

They don’t even know where this building is

it’s so small-intestined

into this campus

and if they knew how much time you spent here they probably wouldn’t be friends with you anymore.

There’s something to be said for the pursuit of knowledge, sure.

The work you do is probably very important,

but not tonight.

Hey! Eyes where I can see them!

Not up there, not through that telescope, not checking out that constellation.

You can travel the universe

and you can go around and around this building looking for another cup of coffee,

but you’ll only end up in a downward spiral.

The universe never loved a voyeur.

Neither did a beautiful woman,

the kind who lives in the next dorm room over,

the kind who, as we speak,

is putting on her lipstick,

locking her door and passing your room forever.

No big dipper can ladle her back to you now.
